UCalgary Campus Mental Health Strategy

The Campus Mental Health Strategy (CMHS) was launched in December 2015 and UCalgary has become a leader in Canadian post-secondary mental health. UCalgary recognizes its pivotal role in creating a campus culture where students, faculty, staff and postdoctoral scholars feel supported and valued. Our vision is to be a community where we care for each other, learn, and talk about mental health and well-being, receive support as needed, and where individually and collectively we realize our potential.

Approximately one in five people experience a mental illness each year, and almost everyone is affected by mental illnesses in a family member, friend, or colleague – including students, faculty, staff, and postdoctoral scholars at UCalgary. Since its launch, the CMHS has created impactful programming for our campus community to improve resilience, reduce stigma, and better reach our diverse populations. We have streamlined and improved services and resources for our campus in partnership with many of our community stakeholders. We have also created initiatives that are innovative and push beyond traditional approaches to addressing mental health and wellbeing on campuses. We continue to be recognized as a leader in the Campus Mental Health Space

The University of Calgary

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is a publicly funded, research-intensive university founded in 1966. Our 14 faculties offer more than 250 academic programs, and our campus is home to more than 50 research institutes and centres. UCalgary combines the best of university tradition with the city of Calgary’s vibrant energy and diversity – and we punch above our weight as a young institution because of our community support.

UCalgary is on a mission. We challenged ourselves to become one of Canada’s top five research universities and established our Eyes High strategy to propel us towards this goal. This name - “Eyes High”- might sound strange to anyone unfamiliar with our community, but our staff, students, and faculty have fully integrated this idiom into our daily language. It is taken from our school’s Gaelic motto Mo Shùile Togam Suas, which translates as “I Will Lift Up My Eyes.” When we set out, UCalgary was ranked ninth in Canada as a research university, with $266.2 million in sponsored research funding. By 2019, we had risen to sixth, with $487.8 million in sponsored research funding. The success of the University of Calgary’s ambitious Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High Energize positions UCalgary as a top university in Canada and demonstrates the value of having an excellent, research-intensive university in this city.

The University of Calgary is one of Canada's top comprehensive research universities, with a mission to discover new knowledge and translate our discoveries into applications that provide benefits to our local, national, and international communities.

It puts the University of Calgary on course to be the entrepreneurial university – one where students, faculty and staff face fewer barriers to innovation and more tools to change the world around them. It is a plan to empower a world-class faculty to tackle society’s big problems and to let the leaders that make up our student body write their own future.
